Torre Morales o Escaletes: This watching tower belongs to the 16th Century, at it’s located at Sierra Helada, at el cabo de la Escaleta ( La Escaleta cape). Now only ruins are left.
Torre Punta del Cavall: It’s similar to the previous tower, and it belongs to the same period. The remains are found at el Rincón de Loix, and they provide good evidence of the vigilance system used against pirate attacks.
Castillo – Balcón del Mediterráneo: The remains of this castle, which used to be a fortress in the Middle Ages, are nowadays the base for a viewpoint known as “el Balcón del Mediterráneo” ( that is, “a window over the Mediterranean”). It’s located in the centre of the old town, over the rocky formation that separates Benidorm’s two large beaches: Levante and Poniente.
Iglesia de San Jaime: This Neoclassical church was built in the 12th Century to honour the patron saint of Benidorm. It lies on el Cerro Canfali, within the old town, and it shelters a stature of la Virgen del Sufragio, which is, together with San Jaime, the second patron saint of the place.
El tossal de la cala: There you can find the remains of a late-Iberian settlement from the 3rd to 1st Centuries b.C. that are a proof of Benidorm’s trading activities at that time. The place can be reached from the end of Poniente beach, heading towards La Cala; the way is well-indicated.
Nuevo Ayuntamiento y Parque de l´Aigüera: The peculiar building now housing the new town council is located at el Parque de l´Aigúera, which is a huge green area designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, and it has several multifunctional spaces. The building’s design, a big structure suspended on two side constructions, is quite surprising.
Centro Cultural Marítimo: The Maritime Cultural Centre is next to Benidorm’s harbour, and it has permanent exhibitions related to the deep connection between Benidorm and the sea. Entrance is free, but please do check the different opening times for every season.
Museo Agrícola: The Agriculture Museum is situated at el Parque de l´Aigüera. Entrance is free. It exhibits a vast collection of farming tools, given that, until only a few decades ago, agriculture used to be one of the mainstays of Benidorm’s economy. |
