The Natural Surroundings

Beaches are without doubt Benidorm’s main attraction, although it offers many other wonders in its natural surroundings.

For instance, “La Isla”, a huge rocky formation with a surface of more than 6 hectares that is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is visible from the coast.  You can take one of the ferries that go to this preserved natural area. It takes only 20 minutes and they depart quite frequently, from the marina and the Rincón de Loix. Once you’re there, you can follow different routes, or walk to the highest point on the island, watch the different bird species that live on it, enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast and fill your stomach at the island’s restaurant before leaving- bear in mind you must leave before sunset, since the island remains uninhabited at night. At its Southern part, you can find “La Llosa”, a marine platform with very rich fauna and flora. It is undoubtedly the most important attraction for those

who love the underwater world, and want to experience the joy of exploring it, either with scuba diving, or by taking a trip on a glass-bottomed  boat.

Benidorm’s natural surroundings offer many other alternatives to visitors, as for instance Sierra Helada. This Natural Reserve is the perfect place for a trekking, and is extended over Benidorm and the villages of L´Alfàs del Pi and Altea. The name of Sierra Helada, which means Frozen Mountain Range, comes from two facts: the reflection of light on limestone, which sometimes creates the optical illusion that it’s frozen, on one hand, and the slightly colder climate of this place, on the other. Anyway, please bear in mind that Summer days can be too hot to walk in the area, but you’ll never regret visiting it: more than 300 metres high cliffs and breathtaking panoramic views over the beautiful mountains that surround Benidorm (Aitana, Puig Campana...) are awaiting. There are also old watch towers facing the sea, which were used to watch the arrival of pirate ships, as well as the remains of Iberian settlements.  We recommend to start the route from the end of Levante Beach and, depending on the distance you want to cover, you can choose one of the paths ( routes go from 2km to 8 km long, and they’re usually well indicated, though it is advisable to ask for a map at the tourist information points.

If you’re eager to see more things, try a visit to one of the different picturesque villages that surround Benidorm. There are several day trips you can easily do by taking a bus from the city.
