Dream beaches, tall buildings and a wonderful weather are just some of the attractions of Benidorm, the first tourist destination in the Mediterranean, which has won a well-deserved international reputation. Located in the province of Alicante, and with an approximate area of 38 square kilometres, it stretches along the gorgeous Costa Blanca in the Mediterranean Sea. Its nearly 70,000 inhabitants welcome every year more than four million visitors from all different nationalities.
As we mentioned before, weather is a decisive factor in making Benidorm a favourite tourist destination. The municipality is located in a bay, so that the coast remains protected from the sea weaves. Inland, Benidorm is surrounded by a mountain range that shields it from the cold and east winds, helping to create its characteristic mild weather, with scanty rainfall, almost all year through. In fact, the average

temperature in Winter is approximately 18 ºC. In Summer, temperatures can reach over 30ºC, freshened by the sea breeze, or by having a good swim at one of its beaches!- don’t forget water temperature can also be quite warm: from 15ºC in Winter, to 26ºC in Summer.
Lets have a look at its past, before it became a tourist, crowded place where skyscrapers seem to reach up into a deep blue sky. The remains of both Iberian and Roman settlements have been found in the municipality, as well as evidence of an Arabic presence in the area, although it was Bernat de Sarrià, a knight of the Crown of Aragon, who founded it in 1325. Due to its geographical position, it soon became a target to two great pirate attacks, in 1410 and 1448, that left it depopulated. Thanks to fishing and agriculture, Benidorm became again a centre of population, and, after some previous futile attempts, it was after the Spanish Civil War when it started being known as a tourist destination. In 1950, the population of Benidorm was just 3,000, while nowadays it has increased dramatically.
Despite the fact that it has been a favourite tourist destination for many years, it doesn’t seem it’s going to change. Some may think it’s too much of a hectic place, or too crowded; though most people simply love its liveliness, the wide range of services, the beautiful beaches, its unique weather…all in all, a place where everything is possible |
